The Queensland Rugby Community is in mourning following the passing of former Queensland Suburban Rugby Union (QSRU) President and Life Member John Barber.

John was involved in many aspects of Rugby. A driven player, coach and administrator, John’s dedication and love of the game was clear to all.

Coaching A-grade and Under-21 sides during the 1980’s, his passion and talent was successfully passed on.Working for many years at the Commonwealth Bank, John was a stalwart of the Commonwealth Bank Rugby Union Football Club (CBRFC) until it was disbanded in 1993.

A popular member of the group, John attend each of the Annual CBRFC Old Boys Golf Days until his health kept him from participating in 2015.

He served as QSRU (then Queensland ‘Sub-Districts’ Rugby Union) President during an important time for the Union, between 1982 and 1989, preparing the Union for its steady growth throughout the 1990s. 

His regard and influence is reflected in the awarding of the Barber Cup to the Union’s First Division champions, currently held by Caboolture.

John was able to present the trophy at the end of the 2014 &’15 seasons, but his declining health meant his nephew took the honour in his stead.Queensland Rugby Union extends its condolences to John’s wife Margaret, son Steve and their family. 

A funeral service will be held on Monday, 31st October, at 10:30am at Our Lady of the Way Church, 38 Armstrong St, Petrie.
