The Queensland Rugby Union (QRU) has today confirmed Gladstone as the location for the St.George Queensland Reds opening 2020 pre-season fixture against the Melbourne Rebels next month.
In partnership with Gladstone Regional Council, the match will be played on Friday 17 January at Marley Brown Oval, the same venue for this year’s National Rugby Championship (NRC) clash between Bond University Queensland Country and Brisbane City.
Following last month’s successful ‘Reds to Regions’ tour across Queensland, the QRU is also proud to again partner with Rural Aid for the match to raise much-needed funds for Queensland communities affected by the drought.
The game in Gladstone is the first-of-two pre-season fixtures in regional Queensland for the Reds, as the squad travels to Dalby the following Friday to host the New South Waratahs on Friday 24 January.
QRU CEO David Hanham said: “We’re excited to take our opening pre-season match to Central Queensland, and we thank Gladstone Regional Council for making it possible.
“It follows our successful NRC Queensland derby at the same venue in September this year and we’re looking forward to returning in January.
“Last month the squad visited 21 towns and cities across Queensland as part of the ‘Reds to Regions’ tour and we’re taking our second pre-season fixture to Dalby, so it’s important we continue to connect with regional communities across the state,” said Hanham.
Gladstone Regional Mayor Matt Burnett said: “This announcement comes off the back of Gladstone Regional Council’s continued effort to attract high-profile sporting teams to the region.
“I’m also pleased to announce revenue from ticket sales will be donated to local farmers through the Gladstone Region Drought Appeal.
“I encourage residents to support our local farmers and the Queensland Reds by purchasing a ticket to the game.
“Council is determined to keep bringing the big games and events to Marley Brown Oval following the positive feedback received from the National Rugby Championship match played in September.”
Tickets to the Gladstone match go on sale at 9:00am tomorrow (Friday 13 December) and can be purchased online at www.gladstoneentertainment.com, in person by visiting the Gladstone Entertainment Convention Centre box office or by phoning the GECC box office on (07) 4792 2822.\
