This weekend’s Super Rugby AUS fixture against the Queensland Reds in Narrabri isn’t just another game for NSW Waratahs winger Sid Harvey.

Being born and bred in the regional NSW town means the Santos Festival of Rugby presents the 19-year-old with a unique opportunity to return to the rugby field of his childhood.

“It’s incredibly special. Not many people get the chance to do this,” Harvey said.

“Running out in Narrabri will mean a lot and be a super special memory.

“I started playing Union when I was six. I remember playing under-8s and we’d get to run on at Dangar Park before first grade or at halftime. That was the coolest thing ever.

“I spent so much time there with Dad training and I just loved being around the place.”

The Santos Festival of Rugby features school visits, a street party, player and legend meet-and-greets, and a full schedule of rugby games.

Harvey said the annual event possesses a powerful ability to inspire the next generation of rugby players and fans in regional areas.

“I remember the last two Festivals in Narrabri so clearly — they were just the most fun,” he said.

“As a kid I was absolutely starstruck seeing those players up close. I don’t think the boys realise how special it is for kids out there.

“It gives country kids a real taste of footy in a regional setting. When I was that age, it made me believe anything was possible.”

Harvey completed his HSC at Narrabri High School before moving to Sydney in 2024 and kicking off a whirlwind 12 months in which he played for the NSW Waratahs U19s, Australia U20s and the Australian Sevens side.

“Moving from country footy into the Sydney system was a big deal,” Harvey said.

“In the bush you might come up against one or two really talented players, but in Sydney it’s all 15.

“Travelling the world with Sevens at age 19 was insane. Every skill is under the microscope. It really forces you to nail the basics, and I’m still learning and getting better at those.”

When Harvey can, he still enjoys escaping the city and returning home to Narrabri for an intentionally quiet weekend.

“Our property is about 25 kilometres out of town. It’s very quiet. I like it like that,” he said.

“I get to spend time with the dogs, my family, maybe go for a hunt, light a fire with Dad and cook something in the camp oven.

“For me, I love to slow down and keep things simple where I can. Narrabri will always be home.”

With the Waratahs coming to town and the atmosphere building, Harvey is counting down the days until he again takes the field at Dangar Park and can play his part inspiring the next generation to follow in his footsteps.
