Headgeared flanker Hugh Stanbury...named Queensland Reds U15s captain

Gregory Terrace tyro Hugh Stanbury will captain the Queensland Reds Under-15s against NSW on Friday at Ballymore Stadium.

The high-energy flanker will lead a side that harnesses the best rugby talent from across the state in that age group.

The U15s will be part of a triple-treat on Friday when U14s, U15s and Super Rugby U16s feature on the same menu at Ballymore.

Queensland U15s coach Sean Graham said Stanbury's infectious energy was a good fit for leading the team.

"Hugh is a real goer. He's a link-playing backrower and throws his energy into everything on the field," Graham said.

"We have a pretty athletic and fit team and pack so we will play to that as a strength."

The versatility of the side is being tapped. Stanley Grellman plays at hooker as a high-performer for Marist College Ashgrove.

He will play tighthead prop on Friday but still throw the ball into the lineouts.

The backline includes Brisbane State High centre Digby Ioane, a standout in the 15As in the GPS competition this year.

He shares the same name as his uncle who played 35 Tests for the Wallabies and scored a try for the Reds in the memorable 2011 Super Rugby final.

Gold Coast product Levi Fien, a boarder at Nudgee College, will have the reins at flyhalf.

The net has been cast wide with country representation such as lock Hugo Vukovich, a Goondiwindi product now boarding at Nudgee, and utility back Zac Zeremes from St John's College, Nambour.

Last year's U15s series was shared 1-all with NSW after a rousing victory in Sydney made up for a disappointing 27-19 loss in Brisbane.

"A big focus for us is a strong start and a good first-game performance. We want NSW to feel uncomfortable when they come to our backyard," Graham said.

The U15s will kick-off at noon after the Reds Academy U14s Development game at 10am between Navy and Gold teams.

The Super Rugby U16s competition will launch for the Reds with a game against Victoria at 1:40pm.
