Alex Mafi will enter his fourth Super Rugby season at the St.George Queensland Reds in 2020.
He was signed by the Reds as an 18-year-old after showing promise as a schoolboys player at St. Joseph’s Nudgee College.
Although clearly a talented young player, it wasn’t until 2017, after recovering from a horror run of injuries, that Mafi began to demonstrate his considerable talents on a consistent basis.
He earned his Super Rugby debut in 2017 and was an integral member of Bond University Queensland Country’ championship-winning run in the National Rugby Championship.
One of only four players to have played in every single match during the Super Rugby season. Wrestled the number two jersey off Brandon Paenga-Amosa after starting at hooker in 11 of 16 matches. Scored a stunning try in Round 14 against the Waratahs at Suncorp Stadium after latching onto a pin-point cross-field kick from Matt McGahan to crash over in the corner.
Added to his Super Rugby experience, jostling with teammates Brandon Paenga-Amosa and Andrew Ready for game time.
Made his debut for the Reds against the Brumbies in Canberra. Enjoyed somewhat of a breakout season where he jostled with Stephen Moore and Andrew Ready for selection in the 23. Scored his first Super Rugby try against the Highlanders in Dunedin in the last round of competition. Claimed the National Rugby Championship title with Bond University Queensland Country.
Won Super U20s Championship with Queensland Under 20s. Shoulder injury ruled him out of contention for the Australian Under 20s, as well as a second season of the NRC.
