The St.George Queensland Reds have bolstered their backrow stocks for the future securing Liam Wright and Angus Scott-Young for the next the two seasons.

The pair will remain at Ballymore through 2021 and follow recent long-term signings of current fellow Queensland pathway products to the Reds.

It follows a memorable weekend for the duo as Wright became the 928th player to represent the Wallabies after he debuted off the bench against the All Blacks in Auckland, while Scott-Young celebrated a Queensland Premier Rugby title with University of Queensland, as the Red Heavies secured a 31-26 victory over Brothers at Ballymore.

Both Wright and Scott-Young have played alongside each other since their time at Anglican Church Grammar School and have gone on to achieve much success together.

The duo won back-to-back Super U20s titles with Queensland U20s in 2016 and 2017 and went on to represent the Australian U20s at the World U20s Championships in Manchester (2016) and Georgia (2017).

The pair were also part of the Bond University Queensland Country side that took out the National Rugby Championship (NRC) in 2017, before making their Super Rugby debuts for Queensland the following year.

Reds backrower Liam Wright said: “I’m really excited to re-sign with the Reds.

“I can’t wait to continue growing and developing alongside a great group of people, players and good mates as we work towards our goal of a Super Rugby championship for Queensland,” said Wright.

“I grew up hearing stories of how Queensland was one of the most successful Rugby provinces in the world during the 90’s. It’s always been a goal of mine to restore the Reds to this former glory,” said Scott-Young.

Reds head coach Brad Thorn said: “It’s good to see these two men remain at Queensland.

“They’re good mates and well respected within our group. They’ve known each other since school. They’ve played U20s together for Queensland and Australia, plus with Queensland Country in the NRC. It’s important we continue to develop their Rugby futures here in Queensland,” said Thorn.

Wright made his Queensland debut in the Reds’ opening Super Rugby match of 2018 and played 12 matches, before becoming the only Reds player to start in every match this year where he played 1268 minutes out of a possible 1280 match-minutes of Super Rugby during the 2019 regular season.

In just his second season of Super Rugby, Wright finished runner-up for the 2019 Pilecki Medal after polling 228 votes across the season.

Also a proud ‘Chruchie’ product, Scott-Young equalled his amount of Queensland caps in his debut season last year with another 14 Super Rugby matches in 2019.

He was in Queensland’s starting XV in all but one game this season and proved his backrow versatility after starting at number eight in four of those matches.

Queensland assistant coach and defence guru Peter Ryan awarded Scott-Young as the Reds best defender in 2019 for his toughness and tireless work ethic in defence.
