Rugby Australia today announced Ivania Wong as the 2022 Buildcorp Super W Player of the Year – a testament to her talent, hard work and dedication to the game of Rugby.
Wong, a talented winger, played a crucial role in the Queensland Reds’ campaign last year, which saw them finish third in the 2022 competition.
Wong, who moved from Rabaul in Papua New Guinea to Brisbane when she was just eight years old, has gone from strength-to-strength, now representing Australia as a Wallaroo on the international stage.
“I would like to thank my teammates for all the hard work and dedication they’ve put in – this award isn’t just for me, it’s for them as well,” said Wong.
“I’d also like to thank my coaches for putting their trust in me on the field and giving me these opportunities.
“I’m aiming to take my game to another level in the 2023 season and play my best footy for my Reds family.”
The winger made her Wallaroos debut in 2022 at Suncorp Stadium, against Fijiana, becoming Wallaroo number 183.
The Wallaroos – who progressed to the Quarter-Finals at the Rugby World Cup in New Zealand last year – now face an exciting 2023 season, as the Pacific Four Series is split across Brisbane and Canada.
Awarded Best Back at the Queensland Reds’ Super W Awards night, Wong has played in every season since the competition’s inception, amassing 25 caps.
The Queensland Reds head coach, Simon Craig, commended Wong on her development, noting her remarkable three-try performance against the Melbourne Rebels at Suncorp Stadium.
“Ivania has been a massive part of the Reds Super W program since its inception,” said Craig.
“Last year we saw her make her Wallaroos debut and go on to represent her country at the Rugby World Cup.
“We couldn't be prouder of Ivania - this award is great recognition for her continued development over many years.
"We look forward to seeing what she can achieve in both her Reds and Wallaroos jerseys in 2023."
