The Queensland Rugby Union is delighted to announce the re-signing of fullback Jock Campbell on the eve of a landmark honour for the Queensland Reds.
Campbell, 30, will captain the Reds in Wednesday night’s blockbuster against the British and Irish Lions at a packed Suncorp Stadium.
It is the venue that the elusive fullback has called home for a fine 93-game career for the Reds that will now extend across 2026 with a new one-year contract.
Campbell made it clear there are powerful attractions to staying in Queensland as part of the rise of the Reds.
“It’s definitely a good spot to be. A lot of the boys are sticking around and we play a good brand of rugby that keeps improving and makes footy fun,” Campbell said.
“Obviously, there’s motivation in there to rectify some shortcomings from two Friday nights in New Zealand at finals time over the past two seasons.
“We get a lot of trust from the coaches. This is my club and there are just good people around the Reds.
“Becoming more adaptable has been the main improvement this season. We can play with a lot of ball movement to attack or play in a slower, kicking-for-territory-type battle.”
Campbell said a more personal goal is also a big driver for this next step in his career.
“I’m getting close to 100 games for Queensland. That mark has been a big factor in my considerations. It would be something special with the names you see on that list,” Campbell said.
Campbell has scored 24 tries for Queensland but been involved in even more with his timing into the backline and incisive running game when spotting opportunities.
Campbell played 10 of the Reds’ 15 matches in the 2025 Super Rugby Pacific season either side of repairing a cracked bone in his wrist.
A four-Test fullback in 2022, Campbell has been delighted by the QRU’s proactive steps to create international rugby opportunities outside Super Rugby.
“I think it’s very cool to play in the different types of games that the Reds are doing a great job of adding to the calendar,” Campbell said.
“We played Wales and Tonga last year (before an end-of-season tour to Japan) and opened this season with a tour to play Bristol and Ulster.
“One-off special events like this game against the Lions do stand out. I came to watch the Wallabies vs Lions Test at Suncorp in 2013 when I was still at school and it has taken this long to come around where I get a chance to play them.”
A commerce graduate, Campbell chose the University of Queensland for his re-signing photos. It is a symbol of the hard work he put in at club level as a premiership-winner in 2017, the first of three club titles, to kick start his opportunities.
The Southport School product shared in Queensland Country’s title in the National Rugby Championship the same year as he advanced through the Queensland rugby pathways. His form won him a Reds contract and a Super Rugby debut in 2019 as Queensland Red #1339.
Starting on the wing in the Reds’ 2021 Super Rugby AU triumph showed him the noise that more than 40,000 fans can make on a big night at Suncorp Stadium.
Reds Head Coach Les Kiss values Campbell’s input highly at the club.
“Having experience around our program is so important. Jock’s communication on the field is valuable for other players apart from the strong skills to his own game,” Kiss said.
“When I first arrived at the Reds, Jock was one of the senior players who helped me a lot around the coaching.
“To have a smart footballer capable of playing fullback, wing or a role at flyhalf during a game is the sort of flexibility all squads need.”
