More than 1200 rugby fans turned into selectors in the opening 72 hours when voting opened for the Reds Legends XV.

Fans are lapping up the concept of picking their own top XV with the Reds celebrating 30 years of Super Rugby with voting here on the best players for each position.

The Legends XV competition is even backed by XXXX, the Reds' major sponsor at the birth of Super Rugby in 1996.

There were fears that the selection process might favour modern players but nostalgia is powerful in rugby and the voting is reflecting a balanced view on players and career performance.

Icons like John Eales, Tim Horan, David Wilson, Toutai Kefu, Matt Cockbain and Ben Tune, who all excelled in the earliest years of Super 12 between 1996-99, are all polling strongly although all are not leading the votes in their specialist positions.

Inevitably, there have been landslide trends with 1999 Rugby World Cup captain Eales untouchable for one lock spot.

It is far from clearcut at outside centre. Former Wallabies Jason Little (37 per cent of votes), Daniel Herbert (33 per cent) and Samu Kerevi (23 per cent) have split the initial count.

Little played the bulk of his career for the Reds before the start of the voting period in 1996. Herbert was the best outside centre in the world during his pomp in the late 1990s and Kerevi was a powerhouse for the Reds at both outside and inside centre.

At tighthead prop, Taniela Tupou and Greg Holmes are both carving off a big chunk of support.

Get voting. There is still time to influence the outcome.

The selection period is from 1996 to the current day, rugby's professional era. That period covers more than 350 Reds players, the 2011 Super Rugby triumph and the 2021 Super Rugby AU title win which drew more than 40,000 fans to Suncorp Stadium.

You pick one player from the five nominees per position via our easy-to-use Legends XV Selector tab on this page.

At hooker, how does the feisty precision of Michael Foley in the 1990s compare to fellow Wallabies Sean Hardman, Stephen Moore, dreadlocked Saia Faingaa and modern  trump Matt Faessler?

It's up to you.

The Legends XV Selector tab will keep a running total of which players lead the votes for each position in the XV.

The same exciting Legends XV vote is going on across the 11 Super Rugby Pacific clubs.

From Monday, February 9, the position winners from each Club Legends XV will go head-to-head to find Super Rugby's Legends XV with fans again voting for the greatest player in each position across the three decades of Super Rugby.

VOTE NOW AND SELECT YOUR REDS LEGENDS XV THANKS TO XXXX
