A bruising young North Queensland prop, named after former Wallabies star Quade Cooper, has won selection in the Queensland Reds Under-15s squad.
Quade Scott, 15, was born in Cooper’s boom year of 2011 when the Reds stormed to the Super Rugby title. He started carving his own rugby path in Airlie Beach and now as a boarder at Nudgee College.
Scott was today named as one of 34 players in the Reds U15s squad for matches against the NSW U15s at Ballymore (October 10) and in Sydney (October 17).
Scott’s mother Bernadette Camilleri confirmed the origins of the Quade name.
“I was pregnant in 2011. My hairdresser said she’d name any son of her's ‘Quade’ and almost every night you’d see something about Quade Cooper on the TV news,” she said.
“I’d never really followed rugby so, yes, you have to say that hearing that name had some influence.”
The talent net has brought together the state’s best U15 prospects in the squad.
The junior clubs of those selected show how strongly the whole state is represented with boys from Rockhampton, Gold Coast, Ipswich, Airlie Beach, Yeppoon, Mackay, Townsville, Toowoomba and Brisbane.
Joseph Rauluni, the youngest son of former Reds and Fijian halfback Jacob, has earned selection with his exploits for Nudgee College this year.
Wylei Parker, the son of Brisbane Broncos legend Corey, has impressed for Nudgee College and earns a backline opportunity.
The side is to be coached by Jack Hawksley, the Ipswich Grammar First XV coach who has worked with the Reds U15s in recent years.
Brad Hemopo, the premiership-winning Brothers backrower, who retired after last Sunday’s grand final, is stepping into coaching as assistant.
October 10 will be a massive triple-header for pathways rugby at Ballymore.
The day will kick-off at 10:15am with a Reds U14 Academy Navy vs Gold match, with standout players selected from the KDL Property Group Emerging Reds Cup.
At 11:45am, the Reds U15s meet the Waratahs. At 1:30pm, the Reds U16s will play the Waratahs U16s.
