This weekend the Sunshine Coast will play host to the 2019 National Youth 7s Championships, with teams from around the country converging on Sunshine Coast Stadium for the two day event.

Queensland will field both Maroon and Grey teams in both the open boys and girls divisions, while U15s teams will compete on a development basis on Saturday.

Queensland Rugby Union (QRU) Sevens High Performance Manager Lachlan Parkinson said: “It’s great to see Sunshine Coast hosting the National Youth 7s Championships this weekend, the Sunshine Coast Stadium is a fantastic facility, but also be able to take the game regionally, it will be exciting for the local Rugby community on the coast to see the up-and-coming Sevens talent from around the Country.

“We have boys and girls selected from all over the state, Sunshine Coast has good representation across both boys and girls teams as the host region, we also have players from Townsville, Gladstone, the Darling Downs and the Gold Coast. There is a great spread of talent.

“We’ve had some great results in this tournament in the past, but the competition improves every year. The preparation has been perfect but our teams will have to be ready for a tough challenge this weekend.

“The Olympic pathway is an important aspect of Sevens for both boys and girls, and with Tokyo 2020 just around the corner, it’s heightened the interest and hopefully our players can put their hands up for selection next year or even in Paris in 2024.”

Games will take place at Sunshine Coast Stadium across both Saturday and Sunday, the draw for the tournament can be found via the Rugby AU website - https://australia.rugby/about/teams-and-comps.
